The mayor of The Pas has stepped down from his position just weeks before the upcoming local election and has also decided not to seek re-election this fall. Andre Murphy, who was initially elected as the mayor of the northern Manitoba town in 2022, made the announcement online on Monday night, stating that he would be resigning with immediate effect.
Murphy confirmed his resignation to CBC News, clarifying that he is no longer serving as the mayor and will not be a candidate in the upcoming election. As a result of his departure, The Pas will be without a mayor for nine weeks until new councils are elected on October 28, including The Pas and other municipalities in Manitoba. A mayoral byelection will not be held before the scheduled election day, and Deputy Mayor Carrie Atkinson will take on most of Murphy’s responsibilities until then.
The former mayor revealed that he and his family reached the decision the previous week and informed the council on Monday. Initially contemplating running for another four-year term, Murphy ultimately decided against it during the summer. He emphasized his commitment to fully engage once he commits to a role and acknowledged that it was time to step back from the opportunity to represent the community for another term.
Expressing his intention to spend more time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren residing in eastern Canada, Murphy emphasized his deep ties to The Pas, where he has lived for over 50 years. Despite leaving his mayoral position, he believes the town is in capable hands and highlighted the collaborative efforts that have propelled the community forward during his tenure.
Reflecting on his time as mayor, Murphy pointed to achievements such as fostering stronger relationships with neighboring communities and governmental bodies, addressing challenges faced by locals, and securing substantial grants for recreational and infrastructural projects. He expressed confidence in the town council and administration to continue the positive trajectory set during his term.
Murphy’s departure has prompted CBC News to seek input from town councillors in The Pas regarding his resignation. He remains optimistic about the future of the community and the potential opportunities that lie ahead for northern Manitoba, voicing his support for ongoing progress in the region.
