A peculiar marvel in nature, the narwhal tusk can grow up to three meters in length, emerging as an upper tooth piercing through the whale’s lip on the left side. Unlike other mammal tusks, the narwhal tusk grows in a perfectly straight manner without any curves.

An international team of researchers has uncovered the mystery behind the tusk’s straight growth, attributing it to the distinct pattern of opposing spirals it exhibits. The revelation came as a surprise to study author Henrik Birkedal from Aarhus University in Denmark, who highlighted the presence of two opposing spirals in the tusk.

Recently published in the journal Nature Communications, the study delves into how these opposing spirals, one clockwise and the other counterclockwise, contribute to the tusk’s remarkable straightness. The investigation was initiated when Birkedal was approached by a colleague studying molecular handedness, intrigued by the consistent leftward spirals of narwhal tusks observed in Greenland.

Collaborating with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, Birkedal’s team utilized advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans to examine the tusks’ inner structure. The findings unveiled a complex composition of dentine and cementum forming the tusks, with two distinct opposing spirals present.

Notably, this discovery not only unravels the mystery of the narwhal’s straight tusk but also holds promise in shedding light on the structural principles underlying human bones and similar biological instances.

Renowned narwhal expert Martin Nweeia, a Harvard University marine mammal teeth specialist, hailed the research for its in-depth exploration of what he describes as “the most extraordinary tooth on the planet.” While he commended the study’s efforts, Nweeia emphasized his past research demonstrating the tusk’s primary function as a sensory organ rather than for defense or feeding.

Looking ahead, Nweeia expressed hope for future research collaborations with Indigenous communities and off-season studies to enhance scientific understanding. He emphasized the value of integrating traditional knowledge with scientific inquiry to gain comprehensive insights into narwhals and their unique adaptations.

The interdisciplinary approach taken by researchers in Greenland and Sweden, as highlighted by Birkedal, underscores the significance of collaboration across diverse fields to unlock new discoveries and insights beyond individual capabilities.
