A 64-year-old man from Quebec has made history in North America by being the first recipient of a regenerated liver, thanks to an innovative technology that could potentially increase the availability of transplantable livers. Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, battled liver issues for 15 years, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Prior to his liver transplant surgery, his doctor informed him that the liver he would receive had been regenerated using a novel machine introduced at Montreal’s Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).

The groundbreaking technology, known as Liver Assist, enables doctors to treat and evaluate a donated liver outside the body before transplantation, opening up the possibility of using organs that may have been deemed too risky otherwise. Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, led the project and conducted Landry’s surgery. The system functions by connecting the donated liver to a machine that circulates an oxygen-rich solution through the organ, potentially reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation during the organ preservation process.

According to Hénault, the Liver Assist technology has the capability to expand the pool of available livers for transplantation significantly. Initial estimates suggest that around 20 to 24 additional livers could become suitable for transplantation in the first year of utilizing this technology, with the potential for further growth as its usage becomes more widespread. This advancement not only enhances the chances of successful transplants but also has the potential to reduce complications, reoperations, and hospital stays for patients in need of liver transplants.

Following his successful surgery, Landry’s recovery progress has been promising, with early indicators showing positive outcomes. He is currently recuperating in Montreal and anticipates returning to Gaspésie soon to continue his recovery. Landry also hopes that his experience will raise awareness about the importance of organ donation, emphasizing that advanced technologies like Liver Assist can only make a difference if there are a sufficient number of donated organs available.
