Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. and Tim Hortons have joined forces to enhance their customer engagement through a collaboration of their loyalty programs. This new partnership, announced on Wednesday, allows customers to connect their Triangle and Tims Rewards accounts to earn between two and five percent in Canadian Tire money in addition to Tims points on specific Tim Hortons purchases.
The primary goal of this initiative is to attract Tim Hortons customers to Canadian Tire locations and vice versa. Currently, 53 percent of Triangle Rewards customers are enrolled in both loyalty programs. Canadian Tire boasts approximately 12 million Triangle Rewards members across its 1,600 locations, while Tim Hortons serves around eight million loyalty program users through its 4,000 restaurants in Canada.
Darryl Jenkins, Canadian Tire’s executive vice-president and chief development officer, mentioned in an interview that the collaboration aims to foster growth in both Triangle Rewards and Tim Hortons’ reward members. The amount of Canadian Tire money earned will vary based on the use of a Triangle credit card for payment and the nature of the purchase.
Canadian Tire money can be redeemed for discounts on purchases at various associated retailers, including SportChek, Mark’s, and Party City, while Tims points can be utilized for food and beverage purchases at Tim Hortons.
The partnership between Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons evolved naturally, driven by the connections between executives of both companies who sit on shared boards and engage in similar networking and sponsorship activities. The collaboration was seen as an opportunity to enhance the value proposition of their loyalty programs.
Despite the positive outlook, Liza Amlani, principal and co-founder of the Retail Strategy Group, expressed skepticism, suggesting that the partnership might be more about gaining market share in a saturated loyalty market than enhancing customer satisfaction. She emphasized the importance of simplicity, transparency, and genuine rewards to ensure the success of such initiatives.
The partnership was initially announced almost a year ago, with the official launch and operational details revealed on Wednesday after a year of technical preparations. The timing of the launch coincides with recent trade disputes between the U.S. and Canada, adding an unexpected element to the partnership’s debut.
Overall, this collaboration between Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons represents a strategic move to leverage their respective customer bases and enhance loyalty program benefits for their shared clientele.
