The Kremlin confirmed that U.S. CIA Director John Ratcliffe engaged with Russian intelligence officials during a recent trip to Moscow, although he did not have a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. President Donald Trump characterized the visit as “semi-routine.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed the press that Putin had been briefed on the discussions from Tuesday’s visit, which occurred amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the stalled negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.

Peskov refrained from disclosing specific details of the conversations but mentioned that there were interactions through the security services. He clarified that there were no formal meetings with Putin, emphasizing that the President stays informed promptly.

The purpose of Ratcliffe’s visit was not explicitly stated by Trump during a radio interview. However, he expressed optimism that the trip could yield positive outcomes, particularly in efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

The last reported visit of a U.S. CIA director to Moscow was in November 2021 when Ratcliffe’s predecessor, William Burns, met with Putin, preceding the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict. Peskov acknowledged that interactions between the intelligence agencies of the two nations were constructive, suggesting the potential for easing the strained U.S.-Russia relations.

He highlighted that such engagements persist even during challenging times in bilateral relations and referenced President Putin’s previous remarks on the matter. However, Peskov cautioned that it was premature to gauge the extent to which these interactions would contribute to navigating the current crisis between the two countries.
