Upon Bashar al-Assad’s departure from Syria in December 2024, the longstanding family reign over the nation abruptly ended. This event triggered a fresh round of investigations into the Assad family, particularly focusing on Asma al-Assad, Bashar’s wife.

Originally known as Emma Akhras, Asma transitioned from a British investment banker in West London to become Syria’s first lady. Once portrayed by Vogue as a symbol of modernization and described as “a rose in the desert,” she evolved into a controversial figure within Assad’s oppressive rule.

Chloe Hadjimatheou, The Observer’s narrative editor and host of the podcast ‘We Call Her Emma,’ discusses Asma al-Assad’s evolution and her involvement in supporting her husband’s regime with guest host Jason Markusoff.
