A Saskatchewan firm is currently engaged in hydrogen drilling operations as part of an initiative to demonstrate the viability of extracting hydrogen from underground sources on a large scale, rather than relying on fossil fuel production methods.

Regina-based Max Power Mining recently commenced drilling its third well in the Lawson Complex, located in southern Saskatchewan, with the aim of establishing a commercial natural hydrogen system, potentially marking a significant milestone in the development of a new primary energy source.

According to Chad Levesque, the company’s president and director, hydrogen plays a crucial role in various industrial processes such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. He emphasized the importance of sourcing hydrogen in a more environmentally friendly manner, highlighting the potential of naturally occurring hydrogen.

Hydrogen, a versatile gas that can be used as fuel or in fuel cells for electricity generation, has gained attention for its ability to reduce emissions in sectors that are challenging to decarbonize, like transportation and steel manufacturing.

While most available hydrogen is currently produced as grey hydrogen from fossil fuels, resulting in significant carbon emissions, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy, offers a cleaner alternative but at a higher cost. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a potential solution as it can be extracted with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions, leveraging existing drilling techniques and equipment.

The process of extracting natural hydrogen involves unique challenges and considerations compared to traditional oil and gas extraction methods. Natural hydrogen is formed underground through processes like serpentinization and radioactive decay, leading to the creation of hydrogen-rich deposits.

Despite the growing interest in natural hydrogen exploration globally, challenges remain in assessing the feasibility and commercial viability of extracting hydrogen from underground sources. Max Power Mining’s ongoing operations at the Lawson Complex aim to gather crucial data on the location, quantity, and extractability of natural hydrogen, with the company planning to release further information as the project progresses.

While the development of natural hydrogen presents promising opportunities for reducing carbon emissions and diversifying energy sources, industry experts caution that it is still early to determine the full potential and impact of white hydrogen on global decarbonization efforts. Ongoing research and exploration will play a key role in unveiling the true possibilities of natural hydrogen as an energy resource.
