Tariffs are “for national security, to protect jobs and to fight unfair trade practices.” Really? According to the latest polls, the vast majority of Americans neither support the government’s tariff policy nor believe it will create jobs.

In reality, tariffs lead to rising costs for businesses and consumers, hinder exports, reduce job opportunities and worsen inflation. Ultimately, they severely weaken U.S. competitiveness and damage the trade relationships it has carefully built over the years.

Amid the global supply chain reshuffle, the U.S. government’s repeated use of the tariff stick not only fails to serve national interests, but highlights the growing disconnect between the government and public opinion.
