The pilots’ union at Air Canada has raised concerns over what they perceive as retaliatory and anti-labor actions taken by Scandinavian Airlines, where the current CEO of Air Canada is set to assume his new position. Anko van der Werff is scheduled to transition from his role as the president and CEO of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) to lead Air Canada at the end of January.
The dismissal of Scandinavian Airlines Captain Mattias Åman Thiel, who also serves as the chair of the SAS section of the Swedish Pilots’ Association, has sparked controversy. While the airline confirmed Thiel’s termination to Radio-Canada, it did not disclose the reasons behind the decision.
Both the union and the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations, representing over 160,000 pilots globally, have called for Thiel’s reinstatement. ALPA Canada, representing pilots at major and regional Canadian airlines, expressed their disapproval of the dismissal in a letter to van der Werff, labeling it as unwarranted.
In response to the situation, ALPA Canada’s president, Tim Perry, urged van der Werff to reconsider the decision regarding Thiel, emphasizing the importance of fair treatment and engagement with Air Canada pilots.
When contacted by Radio-Canada, an Air Canada spokesperson declined to comment on the matter involving another airline. While van der Werff did not respond to interview requests, SAS defended its actions, citing its commitment to the Scandinavian labor model and collaboration with employees.
Tristan Okkonen, chair of the Swedish Airline Pilots Association (SWEALPA), expressed shock over Thiel’s dismissal, revealing that the allegations against Thiel involved travel activities conflicting with his union responsibilities. The pilots’ union is currently pursuing legal action to reinstate Thiel and seek compensation from SAS.
The situation has raised concerns among Canadian pilots, with the head of the Canadian pilots’ union fearing potential challenges in the future CEO’s relationship with employees. Building on the importance of trust in maintaining a healthy work environment, efforts are being made to garner support for Thiel’s cause among union members.
