NASA has initiated a groundbreaking mission to explore key mysteries in astrophysics and cosmology by launching the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, the space agency’s new flagship observatory. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will orbit beyond the moon at Lagrange Point 2, around 1.6 million kilometers from Earth. Named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, the telescope is designed to operate for at least five years, with a potential for an additional five years based on fuel availability.
Mission scientists will spend the next 90 days commissioning the telescope and preparing for its scientific operations. The telescope is expected to capture and transmit its first high-resolution images before the winter holidays. NASA officials anticipate that the Roman telescope will become a household name alongside other renowned space observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope.
