Conservationist Mark Thomas recently shared insights on the remarkable breeding success of a male Montagu’s harrier that has significantly contributed to preserving the species in the United Kingdom. Known as AU, this 10-year-old male bird has fathered an impressive total of 16 offspring, with 10 born in the last two years alone.
According to Thomas, AU’s exceptional breeding performance has played a crucial role in sustaining the Montagu’s harrier population in the UK. The species, which migrates between Africa, Asia, and Europe, faces global population decline and is classified as a species of least concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List.
In the UK, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has been working diligently to safeguard the dwindling population of Montagu’s harriers. The species, which saw a peak of 30 breeding pairs in the 1950s before dwindling to zero in the 1970s, has faced fluctuations in numbers over the years. Thomas emphasized the importance of current conservation efforts, noting a recent positive development in the species’ population.
AU’s successful breeding efforts have been instrumental in the recent rise of Montagu’s harrier chicks in the UK. His acrobatic mating displays have attracted female harriers, leading to the birth of six chicks this year. Conservationists are optimistic that AU’s offspring, including two male chicks from a previous year, will contribute to the species’ future population growth.
To protect the new hatchlings, conservationists have secured their nests in a confidential location on a British farm, implementing measures to shield them from predators and potential dangers. Moving forward, the RSPB has equipped two juvenile harriers with satellite trackers for the first time, enabling researchers to monitor their migration patterns and potential return to the UK for breeding.
