The Vancouver Rise have welcomed new additions to their defensive lineup. The Northern Super League team recently signed two defenders to strengthen the squad ahead of their upcoming match against the Halifax Tides. Chantelle Swaby, who previously played for Leicester City in the Women’s Super League, and Kaela Hansen, who comes from NSL side AFC Toronto, are the latest recruits.

Head coach Anja Heiner-Moller expressed excitement about the qualities both players bring to the team as they aim to enhance their playoff prospects. Swaby, 28, brings a wealth of experience from playing in various leagues around the world, including the National Women’s Soccer League and France’s top division. She is known for maintaining composure in high-pressure situations and providing leadership on the field.

Hansen, 26, is thrilled to return to her hometown of Burnaby, B.C., to play for the Rise. She emphasized the significance of being close to her family and playing in front of a supportive home crowd. The signings of Swaby and Hansen come after the retirement of Mariah Lee, who decided to pursue a career in law, leaving a gap in the team.

In other news, Vancouver bid farewell to goalkeeper Kirstin Tynan, who was loaned to the Halifax Tides for the remainder of the season. The Rise, the defending champions of the NSL, are currently striving to secure a playoff spot, trailing behind Halifax by five points. Forward Jessica De Fillippo emphasized the team’s determination to return to the playoffs and showcase their competitiveness until the end of the season.
