A container ship, the MSC Baltic III, stranded off Newfoundland’s western coast, suffered damage due to severe winds and storm surge in the region recently, as reported by the Canadian Coast Guard. An official update released by the agency on Friday highlighted a noticeable deterioration on the vessel’s port side, with significant shifting observed in both the bow and stern sections.
The MSC Baltic III initially ran aground in Cedar Cove near Lark Harbour on the island’s west coast back in February, initiating ongoing cleanup and salvage operations. Last week, Bruce English, the senior response officer from the Canadian Coast Guard’s Marine Environmental and Hazards Section, anticipated that the ship’s removal might not occur until the following summer, citing the need to extract remaining oil from its tanks.
On the latest assessment conducted on Saturday, the salvage team noted damage to their equipment on board the Baltic III, alongside debris sighted floating in the water and along the shoreline. Crews are actively evaluating the extent of the vessel’s damage to determine the necessary course of action.
