The University of Saskatchewan Huskies secured a spot in the national championship game by defeating the Queen’s Golden Gaels 22-11 in the Mitchell Bowl held in Saskatoon on Saturday. They will now face off against the Montreal Carabins in the upcoming Vanier Cup in Regina.

Daniel Kubongo was recognized as the offensive standout of the game for his exceptional performance as a punt returner and receiver. His remarkable 85-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter boosted the Huskies to a 14-1 lead at halftime. In a touching gesture, Kubongo dedicated his touchdown to the Huskies’ quarterback Anton Amundrud, who is battling cancer.

Head coach Scott Flory expressed his deep affection for Amundrud, stating that the team rallied together in support of their teammate during a challenging week. The Huskies demonstrated resilience on the field, with quarterback Jake Farrell connecting with Daniel Wiebe for a crucial 41-yard touchdown.

Despite a strong effort from Queen’s in the third quarter, the Huskies maintained their lead and ultimately secured the victory with solid defensive play and key field goals. The team’s focus on special teams preparation paid off, with Kubongo’s impactful return setting the tone for the game. Defensive player of the game, Seth Hundeby, showcased his skills with two sacks and a forced fumble.

Looking ahead to the Vanier Cup, the Huskies are gearing up to face the Montreal Carabins in what promises to be an intense showdown at Mosaic Stadium in Regina. The Carabins earned their spot in the championship game by defeating the St. Mary’s Huskies 49-19 in the Uteck Bowl.
