At the recent B.C. NDP convention in Victoria, Premier David Eby received strong backing from party members, despite facing criticism from labor and environmental factions. Out of 743 NDP delegates, over 82% voted against holding a leadership race, signaling support for Eby’s leadership.

Addressing the delegates before the vote, Eby expressed gratitude to the party members, highlighting the diversity within the NDP, which includes labor organizers, Indigenous leaders, farmers, activists, and business figures.

However, tensions emerged among party faithfuls during the convention. Delegates raised concerns about the government’s approach to expediting resource projects, its stance on public sector unions, and its outreach to younger demographics.

Jäger Rosenberg, a candidate for party president, noted the loss of young supporters to the B.C. Greens and Conservatives due to frustrations with affordability issues. To attract them back, he emphasized the need for the NDP to present a hopeful vision as an alternative to certain political factions.

The gathering marked the first post-election convention, where the NDP narrowly avoided defeat to the B.C. Conservatives. Labor tensions were acknowledged, with the B.C. Federation of Labor president highlighting the challenges faced during the B.C. General Employees’ Union strike and the need to mend relations.

Concerns over climate change and environmental policies also surfaced, particularly regarding the party’s stance on the forestry industry and the proposed North Coast Transmission line. Delegates questioned the use of taxpayer funds to support the fossil fuel sector, expressing reservations about fast-tracking resource projects.

Amid discussions, Eby defended the government’s position on accelerating projects, emphasizing the potential benefits of public equity stakes in major ventures. The resolution backing the North Coast Transmission line received substantial approval, with a focus on election preparedness to counter any opposition to the government’s initiatives.

As debates continue within the party, the NDP aims to address internal divisions and strengthen its position ahead of potential challenges.
