During Bob Rae’s term as Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations in 2020, the world faced significant challenges, starting with the global pandemic lockdown. His tenure witnessed major events such as the Taliban’s control of Afghanistan, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Hamas attacks on Israel, and Israel’s subsequent actions in Gaza. The United Nations has faced criticism, notably from U.S. President Donald Trump, for its peacekeeping shortcomings.

Despite his own criticisms of the UN, Bob Rae expressed belief in its people and mission on his last day in office. Reflecting on his departure, Rae shared mixed feelings, citing nostalgia for the relationships built with colleagues and officials. He emphasized the importance of the UN’s humanitarian efforts worldwide.

Addressing the Economist’s characterization of a “grim future” for the UN during the Trump era, Rae highlighted the resilience and dedication of UN staff in making positive impacts globally, even in challenging circumstances like Gaza and Sudan. He stressed the urgency of taking action to improve the world rather than lamenting its current state.

Rae recalled pivotal moments during his tenure, including the Afghan collapse, the Ukraine invasion, and the Gaza crisis, which shaped his work at the UN. Despite the emotional toll of these events, Rae emphasized the need to stay engaged and seek solutions rather than becoming desensitized.

Regarding his decision to remain seated during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the UN, Rae explained his belief in Canada’s presence and the importance of listening to diverse perspectives for constructive dialogue. He reiterated his commitment to promoting peace and understanding between conflicting parties in the Middle East.

Reflecting on his UN ambassadorship, Rae acknowledged personal growth in listening skills and building relationships, emphasizing his contribution to positive change. The experience, following in his father’s footsteps from 50 years ago, taught Rae valuable lessons about diplomacy, empathy, and perseverance in international relations.
