The Emmy Awards are set to make the switch to Prime Video from 2027 onwards as part of a six-year agreement between Amazon and the Television Academy. This move marks the end of a 70-year tradition where broadcast networks aired the ceremony.
The transition to streaming services, which have been dominating the prestigious categories at the Emmys, was announced on Tuesday. Since 1955, the awards show has been broadcast on one of the four major networks annually. Known as the “Wheel Deal,” it rotated between ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC over the past three decades.
A significant change with the new deal is the establishment of a long-term partnership, providing continuity for the awards show starting from next September’s ceremony. Cris Abrego, the chairman of the Television Academy, emphasized the importance of this stability in allowing for continuous improvement year after year.
It’s worth noting that the Emmy Awards will remain accessible for free, consistent with the Academy’s requirement for no subscription to Prime Video being necessary to watch the event. This contrasts with the Oscars’ recent move to YouTube, announced in 2025 and effective from 2029.
Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the urgency to capitalize on the new partnership, aiming to drive increased viewership and attract a younger audience. The availability of Emmy-nominated content on Prime Video, including acclaimed shows like “Widow’s Bay” and “The Studio,” presents an opportunity to promote the awards show throughout the year.
Abrego acknowledged the significance of transitioning to streaming platforms but stressed that the quality of content remains the primary focus for the Academy. He emphasized the importance of recognizing excellence regardless of the delivery medium.
Live events on Amazon have become increasingly common, with Prime Video showcasing major sports and events over the years. Hopkins emphasized the platform’s hybrid nature of offering both live and on-demand content, making live programming a key priority.
While the Emmy Awards will continue to be held in September 2027, the possibility of adjusting the timing in the future remains open for discussion with Amazon. Abrego indicated a willingness to explore potential date changes as part of the evolving partnership.
