Eva Marie Saint, a delicate and slender actress who achieved critical acclaim by winning an Academy Award for her debut in “On the Waterfront” and portraying alongside Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest,” has passed away at the age of 102 in her Los Angeles residence. The news was confirmed by her family spokesperson, Jeff Sanderson.

Saint, known for her acting prowess that extended well into her 90s, made a remarkable entry into Hollywood as the romantic interest of Marlon Brando’s character in “On the Waterfront.” Her Oscar win in 1954, while pregnant with her first child, was a standout moment as she humorously quipped about possibly going into labor on stage (her son was born two days later).

Despite the instant stardom brought on by her award, Saint opted for a different path, rejecting studio contracts and declining major roles to focus on her family. Her husband, Jeffrey Hayden, a TV and stage director, played a pivotal role in persuading her to star in Hitchcock’s renowned thriller “North by Northwest.”

Transitioning more towards television in the 1970s, Saint experienced a resurgence in the 1980s with roles in popular shows like “Moonlighting” and films like “Nothing in Common.” Her career spanned into the 21st century with appearances in various movies, culminating in a performance in the 2021 audio play “The Bus Ride.”

Married to Hayden for 65 years until his passing in 2016, Saint’s journey in the entertainment industry was shaped by her early aspirations to become a teacher, which eventually led her to pursue acting. Her breakthrough came when she joined the Actors Studio, where she honed her craft and overcame her shyness under the guidance of Lee Strasberg.

Eva Marie Saint’s legacy as an actress and advocate for organized labor will endure, leaving behind a profound impact on future generations of union members.
