German authorities are examining a drone loaded with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to increase retaliation against nations assisting Ukraine.
“We will employ more severe methods to dismantle everything that supports the West in aiding Kyiv’s war efforts,” Lavrov stated in an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media. He added, “We are already taking action.”
The drone, containing an unidentified explosive device, was found by an airport staff member in the security area of the cargo operations zone near the south runway of Leipzig airport, which is labeled as “critical infrastructure.”
Leipzig serves as a crucial NATO airport for transporting armaments, ammunition, weapons, and other military supplies to Ukraine via flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.
The presence of the drone next to a Ukrainian cargo plane signifies “an elevated level of risk” for Germany, according to the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. He stated that the incident appears to be part of a “professional hybrid threat scenario” rather than the work of amateurs.
While German authorities are investigating the incident and have not disclosed the drone’s origin, U.S. intelligence officials informed the Wall Street Journal that intelligence reports suggest the drone likely belonged to the Russian government.
Germany is responding cautiously by enhancing anti-drone capabilities and refraining from premature attributions.
Dobrindt emphasized the ongoing establishment of facts, stating, “We are in the midst of the investigation stage, and it would not be appropriate for a federal minister to make premature comments on this matter.”
Officials warn of Russia’s utilization of drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence campaigns across Europe, including in anticipation of upcoming regional elections in Germany.
Dobrindt highlighted that Germany is exposed to daily hybrid warfare, encompassing espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert actions by foreign entities aiming to destabilize the country and induce political and social transformations.
In recent years, U.S. and western intelligence uncovered a Russian plot to assassinate the CEO of German defense contractor Rheinmetall, a significant supplier of armaments to Ukraine.
Moreover, German federal prosecutors arrested an individual suspected of spying for Russia and scouting sabotage targets, including details on Berlin’s military support for Ukraine and information regarding the defense industry.
The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russia’s interference in Germany through online activities, such as the Operation Overload campaign, aiming to exploit emerging controversies within NATO member countries and Ukraine.
The ISD reported that the latest phase of the campaign includes videos impersonating various entities to influence German politics and society, especially during upcoming regional elections.
Hans-Jakob Schindler from the Counter Extremism Project described the drone incident in Leipzig as an “aggressive escalation” of Russian interference, testing Germany’s tolerance levels.
Schindler raised concerns about the transition from hybrid warfare tactics to physical attacks, prompting questions about the boundary between defense measures and direct conflict.
He noted Lavrov’s statements as a departure from previous Kremlin denials, signaling a heightened aggressiveness in Russia’s campaign against Europe, the West, and NATO.
