Chelsea’s Kadeisha Buchanan, a defender from Canada, understands the struggles of dreaming big while facing financial constraints. Growing up in Toronto as the youngest of seven daughters in a single-parent household, she frequently moved from place to place.
Soccer became Buchanan’s refuge, despite the financial burdens. She prioritized buying new soccer cleats over school shoes and often relied on teammates for rides to training and matches.
Launching a foundation to support girls from single-parent families in pursuing their soccer aspirations, Buchanan joins 13 other female players in the FIFA Player Impact Programme. Reflecting on her experiences, Buchanan expressed her passion for the project, which mirrors her own journey.
Raised in various locations around Toronto due to her mother’s challenges in finding employment, Buchanan’s family struggled to cover her soccer expenses. Through community support from friends and family, Buchanan overcame financial hurdles to pursue her football career.
Empowered by an initial fund of $25,000 and guidance from FIFA, Buchanan aims to offer financial aid and mentorship to 12 girls aged 12 to 16, assisting them in reaching the next level, whether in professional soccer or securing scholarships in the United States.
Selected alongside thirteen other players, Buchanan’s initiative aims to extend players’ impact beyond the field. FIFA Chief Football Officer Jill Ellis emphasized the importance of players leaving a lasting legacy and supporting future generations.
Ellis praised Buchanan’s efforts in engaging girls in soccer and serving as a role model. Through her foundation, Buchanan envisions providing opportunities to young girls that she once longed for, such as attending professional matches.
Despite a recent injury, Buchanan, a key member of the Canadian Olympic gold-winning team, remains dedicated to her recovery and coaching pursuits, working towards obtaining her UEFA A license.
