Chances are either you or someone you know proudly considers themselves a “pet parent.” It’s no surprise as Canada boasts one of the highest rates of pet ownership globally, according to the Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI).
Government data indicates that in 2024, over 12 million Canadian households had at least one cat or dog, with cats and dogs being the most favored animal companions, numbering 8.9 million and 8.3 million, respectively. Additionally, Canadians also care for millions of birds, fish, and reptiles as pets.
While research has demonstrated the positive impacts of owning a pet on people’s health and well-being, Jay Ingram, the author of “The Science of Pets,” emphasizes that these benefits do not fully explain humans’ strong desire to connect with the natural world.
When questioned about the reasons for keeping pets, Ingram refers to various opinions but notes the absence of a definitive answer. One theory he highlights is Edward O. Wilson’s “biophilia” hypothesis, suggesting that humans’ inherent inclination towards other living beings is fundamental to our humanity and connects us to all living species.
The quest to strengthen human-animal bonds has led to scientific endeavors in animal cloning and understanding their communication patterns. In a conversation with guest host David Common on “The Sunday Magazine,” Jay Ingram delves into these advancements.
Celebrities like Paris Hilton and Tom Brady, who has invested in Colossal Biosciences, a biotechnology and genetic engineering company, have explored pet cloning. Although a relatively modern practice, cloning is more prevalent than commonly perceived. Pets often exhibit sensitivity to human emotions, particularly during times of distress, sparking curiosity about their level of understanding. While the scientific community acknowledges animal sentience, the depth of comprehension regarding pets’ thoughts and emotions remains limited. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) may offer insights into the minds of animals like dogs and cats, although significant progress in this area is still pending.
Research on wild animals progresses quicker due to the absence of pet owners’ biases. For instance, studying sperm whales’ communication patterns without preconceived notions reveals unexpected insights. However, interpreting pets’ behaviors can be challenging, as demonstrated by debunking the notion of dogs feeling guilt. Understanding animal communication, such as prairie dogs signaling about specific threats, holds promise for further discoveries, but the human element in pet-keeping may hinder a complete understanding of animals’ cognition.
