Riverview resident Eric Michaud fondly recalls an incident at the Moncton zoo where Azizi, the male lion, playfully sprayed visitors with urine over the fence. Michaud’s wife and daughter were among those who experienced the lion’s mischievous act. Despite the surprise, Michaud shared that there was laughter among the visitors.

Having been regular visitors to the Magnetic Hill Zoo for 15 years, Michaud expressed sadness upon learning about Azizi’s euthanasia due to his declining health at 18 years old. According to zoo director Selina Cowman, Azizi was receiving specialized care for arthritis and scoliosis associated with aging.

Describing Azizi as a lethargic feline often found beside his female companion, Amara, Michaud mentioned that the lion had a habit of roaring loudly in the early mornings. Recalling how Azizi attempted the urine prank on his family twice in a year, Michaud shared that they were prepared the second time, refusing to fall for it again.

Meanwhile, Roslyn Sambles from Fredericton, a long-time zoo visitor, reminisced about seeing Azizi and Amara as cubs since 2009. Sambles tearfully expressed her sorrow over Azizi’s passing, praising his strength, majestic appearance, and gentle nature towards Amara.

Expressing concern for Amara’s well-being now that she is alone, Sambles highlighted that the lioness, who is of similar age to Azizi, is currently in good health. Cowman mentioned that there are no immediate plans to introduce another lion to keep Amara company, emphasizing the emotional impact of Azizi’s departure on the zoo staff.

The community’s focus is now on ensuring Amara’s care and well-being in the wake of Azizi’s passing.
