The University of Saskatchewan Huskies entered the 60th Vanier Cup with a chance to secure their first national championship in nearly 30 years. Playing at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium before a crowd of around 9,000 fans, the stage was set for a special moment that could have highlighted Saskatchewan’s football supremacy for the year, aiming to clinch a national title, a feat not achieved since 1998.

However, it was the Université de Montréal Carabins who emerged victorious, defeating the Huskies 30-16 in a statement win, claiming their second Vanier Cup in three years and solidifying their football program as one of the country’s strongest.

The Huskies, making their third national final appearance in five years, faced an uphill battle throughout the game, trailing from the kickoff. The standout performance of the Carabins’ rookie quarterback Pepe Gonzalez, particularly in the second half, outmaneuvered the Huskies’ defense and sealed the victory for his team.

Despite the loss, Huskies’ quarterback Jake Farrell expressed disappointment, highlighting the team’s resilience in the face of adversity throughout the season. Taking over the starting role from Anton Amundrud, Farrell emphasized the team’s determination to win the championship for their teammate battling lymphoma.

Head coach Scott Flory commended his players for overcoming numerous challenges, emphasizing the team’s pride and fighting spirit. Running back Ryker Frank credited the team’s strong bond as a key factor in their journey to the final.

For many players, including linebacker Seth Hundeby and receiver Daniel Wiebe, the game marked the end of their university careers. While the loss was tough, they expressed gratitude for the experiences and camaraderie shared with their teammates, reaffirming their loyalty to the Huskies beyond the game.

The defeat in the Vanier Cup serves as a poignant conclusion for departing players, but their dedication to the team and support for future games remain unwavering, embodying the spirit of “Once a Husky, always a Husky.”
