A group of artisans in the northern region of Manitoba have been creating and amassing numerous quilts to provide warmth and solace to hundreds of residents who lost their residences in this year’s wildfire in Denare Beach, just across the border in northeastern Saskatchewan.

The devastating wildfire swept through the village in early June, resulting in the destruction of 230 homes. In response, the North Star Quilt Guild, situated in Flin Flon approximately 20 kilometers away in Manitoba, has been collecting quilts to distribute to every household affected by the fire in Denare Beach.

Collaborating with quilter Christine Bell in The Pas, Manitoba, the Quilt for Wildfire Relief initiative has already delivered 54 quilts to the Village of Denare Beach’s Seventh Avenue office. Denare Beach Coun. Karen Thomson expressed her gratitude for the generous donations, referring to the room where the quilts are stored as “the vault” due to the influx of quilts.

Geri Beaton-Walker, a wildfire victim who lost her home on Ninth Avenue, shared her emotional experience of selecting a quilt on Thanksgiving, expressing deep gratitude for the kindness and effort put into creating such beautiful and practical items. Lois Moberly, another resident who lost her home, was touched by the rich colors of the quilt she chose, appreciating the thoughtful gesture from the Saskatoon Regional Quilters.

The quilts have provided much-needed comfort and hope to the residents during these challenging times, as mentioned by Thomson. Audrey Neufeld, co-secretary of the North Star Quilt Guild and the liaison for Quilt for Wildfire Relief, has been actively delivering quilts to Denare Beach, with plans for additional deliveries in the coming weeks.

A network of quilters from various provinces, including Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and even Ontario, have contributed quilts made with love and care. Neufeld emphasized that each quilt symbolizes a warm embrace and a reminder that someone cares, aiming to bring comfort and joy to the affected families.

Despite the time-intensive nature of quilt-making, the guild continues to welcome donations from willing quilters to support the ongoing initiative.
