Deb Perelman, the creator of the renowned food blog Smitten Kitchen, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her website this summer. Over the years, she has adapted to the evolving online landscape by engaging with her audience on various social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, while always directing them back to the original content on her site.

However, Perelman now faces a new obstacle in the form of AI-generated summaries. She expressed surprise at seeing excerpts of her recipes displayed in AI-generated blurbs at the top of search results without her consent. This discovery has prompted her to seek protective measures against AI infringement on her website.

Recently, Google introduced “AI Mode” in its search function, shifting towards a more conversational and interactive search experience that rivals AI chatbots like ChatGPT. This trend has led to a significant increase in users engaging with AI-generated summaries directly on Google’s main page, reducing the need to visit external websites for information.

As human web traffic declines, businesses are forced to adapt to the growing prominence of AI in online interactions. Companies like Logik Digital are now focusing on Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) in addition to traditional SEO techniques to tailor content for AI consumption. This shift involves providing detailed information that not only enhances a site’s credibility but also aligns with the questions posed by AI algorithms.

The rise of AI-driven content consumption poses challenges for website creators who rely on human traffic for revenue through advertisements or subscriptions. Mozilla’s president, Mark Surman, raises concerns about the future of independent content creation if AI-generated content supplants original, creative work.

Moreover, the proliferation of AI bots accessing web content has financial implications for websites like Wikipedia, which incur costs to maintain server infrastructure to handle bot requests. To offset these expenses, Wikimedia Enterprise has established partnerships with major AI companies to provide bulk access to Wikipedia’s data for a fee.

In response to the shifting landscape of online content consumption, some media companies are considering reevaluating their relationships with platforms like Google. While challenges persist, there is hope for a model that preserves the diversity of voices on the open web, emphasizing the unique perspectives that individual creators bring to their content.
