Every week, Brenda Lipson from London leads a class of Parkinson’s patients in boxing, encouraging them with the motto “Quitting is not an option.” The class, part of the Knock Out Parkinson’s Disease (KOPD) program in London, aims to improve fitness and mitigate the symptoms of the disease through non-contact boxing exercises. Lipson, drawing on her 44 years of physiotherapy experience and personal connection to Parkinson’s through her husband, emphasizes the importance of tailored exercise plans for individuals with the disease.

The KOPD classes, operated by Neuphysio and Damian Warner Fitness Centre, have seen significant success over the past three years, with more than 35 participants benefiting from the specialized program. The sessions, held thrice weekly, focus on various movements to enhance strength, coordination, and balance, with volunteers ensuring participant safety and individualized attention.

Georges Menard, a 79-year-old class member, describes KOPD as his “happy place,” crediting the program for his improved mobility and overall well-being. Similarly, Linda Moore, diagnosed with Parkinson’s 21 years ago, highlights the sense of community and physical improvements she has experienced since joining. Physiotherapist Mairi Greig, the program director, underscores the transformative impact of targeted exercise on Parkinson’s patients, aiming to slow disease progression and enhance quality of life.

The success of KOPD in empowering individuals with Parkinson’s and fostering a supportive community underscores the vital role of tailored exercise programs in managing the disease. With tangible outcomes and a commitment to long-term benefits, the program continues to make a positive impact on participants’ lives, offering hope and resilience in the face of Parkinson’s challenges.
