The Israeli military conducted airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Wednesday targeting Hezbollah infrastructure following a drone strike that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, including students on a bus. These actions occurred amidst escalating tensions between Israel and militant groups.
An airstrike the previous night in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein el-Hilweh claimed the lives of 13 individuals, marking the deadliest Israeli attack since the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire a year ago. The Israeli military issued warnings of further strikes on Hezbollah targets in several southern Lebanese villages and urged civilians to evacuate the areas. Subsequently, airstrikes commenced in Shehour and Deir Kifa with no immediate reports of casualties.
Israel’s military alleged that Hezbollah was actively re-establishing itself and expanding its presence in southern Lebanon, citing concerns about weapons facilities located among civilian populations. Israel and Lebanon had previously agreed to a ceasefire, with Lebanon committing to suppressing Hezbollah activities in the region.
The drone strike earlier in the day in Tiri, southern Lebanon, resulted in one fatality and 11 injuries, including students on a bus passing nearby. The Lebanese Health Ministry and state media confirmed the casualties. The incident occurred in close proximity to a school bus, injuring the driver and students. Additionally, the Israeli military later disclosed that a Hezbollah operative was among those killed in the strike.
Lebanese authorities restricted access to the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp near Sidon, where the aftermath of the strike revealed damaged vehicles, debris, and bloodstains. Paramedics were seen searching for remains at the scene. Hamas, a Palestinian group, denounced the attack on its alleged training compound, emphasizing that the target was a sports playground. Palestinian factions in Lebanon had previously begun surrendering their weapons to the Lebanese government earlier in the year.
The recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah commenced in October 2023 following a Hamas assault on southern Israel, triggering reciprocal attacks. The ensuing war inflicted significant casualties and destruction, with over 4,000 fatalities in Lebanon and substantial material damages. The government’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah face challenges, with the group insisting on Israeli withdrawal from certain border areas and cessation of frequent military actions.
