At least 26 individuals lost their lives, and numerous others were reported missing following a Russian drone and missile assault that targeted residential buildings in Ternopil, a city in western Ukraine, according to Ukraine’s interior minister on Wednesday.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko disclosed that 26 people remained unaccounted for after the attacks, including three children, while nearly 100 individuals sustained injuries.

The assault, which involved 476 drones and 48 missiles from Russia, caused severe damage to energy and transportation infrastructure, resulting in emergency power outages in various regions amidst harsh weather conditions.

The upper levels of an apartment building in Ternopil were severely damaged in the attack, with billowing black smoke and an orange glow from fires visible in the vicinity.

Klymenko, via Telegram, informed that rescue teams toiled through the night, searching the debris of the ravaged apartment complex, emphasizing the urgency of locating any potential survivors buried under the rubble.

The devastation left no apartment untouched in the building, with two entrances completely burnt out and a swift spread of flames engulfing the structure, leading to panic among residents who attempted desperate escapes, as per Klymenko.

Tragically, the casualties included three children, with Oksana Kobel anxiously hoping for her son’s safe discovery after he was present on the ninth floor during the attack.

In response to the strikes in Ternopil and other cities, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the residential buildings’ targeting, expressing concerns about potential individuals trapped under debris. He called for increased international pressure on Russia to halt the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and bolster Kyiv’s defense capabilities.

As the situation unfolded, energy facilities in seven Ukrainian regions were reportedly hit, leading to country-wide power consumption restrictions. Reports of explosions in Lviv and citizens seeking refuge in metro stations in Kyiv further underscored the widespread impact of the attacks.

Russia maintained that it retaliated against alleged terrorist acts on its territory, denying deliberate civilian targeting, while Ukraine’s military responded with missile strikes on Russian military targets.

Zelenskyy’s diplomatic efforts included talks in Turkey and scheduled engagements with U.S. military officials to revive peace negotiations with Russia, amid the absence of direct discussions between Kyiv and Moscow since July.

The Kremlin downplayed reports of a U.S.-proposed peace plan for Ukraine, emphasizing the ongoing complexities in the conflict resolution process. International allies continued discussions on supporting Ukraine and deterring further Russian aggression, should a ceasefire be achieved, addressing financial aid, security guarantees, and future defense commitments.
