A 35-year-old individual has been taken into custody following allegations of multiple arsons in Winnipeg, which involved fires at the constituency offices of two Manitoba cabinet ministers and various restaurants. Jesse Robert Shawn Wheatland is now facing a total of 22 charges related to arson, break-ins, and property damage at 11 different locations from June 11 until the day of his arrest. The incidents included fires at the constituency offices of Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine and Homelessness and Addictions Minister Bernadette Smith.

Additionally, Wheatland has been charged with offenses at several locations, including the Winnipeg School Division administration building, a provincial treatment center, the Exchange Event Centre, and six other businesses in the Exchange District and downtown areas. The charges range from arson and breaking and entering to causing property damage.

The arrest took place on Tuesday evening in the vicinity of the treatment center, where Wheatland allegedly set a fire before being apprehended. Police emphasized that Wheatland acted alone, and there is no connection to previous extortion incidents. The investigation, which culminated in Wheatland’s arrest, was described as exhaustive and emotionally taxing for law enforcement and fire service personnel.

The suspect faces multiple counts of arson causing property damage, arson with disregard for human life, breaking and entering to commit arson, breaking and entering with intent, and mischief under $5,000. Amid the relief felt within the community and affected businesses, ministers Fontaine and Smith expressed their sense of security following the arrest, particularly after enduring months of uncertainty and fear due to the incidents.

Business owners impacted by the arsons also welcomed the news of the arrest, acknowledging the significant impact on their operations and the relief felt knowing the suspect is off the streets. The apprehension of Wheatland has brought a sense of closure to the affected community members and authorities involved in the case.
