U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced his support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging that he should remain in his position despite recent controversies. Trump praised Infantino’s leadership, highlighting the success of the most recent World Cup under his guidance. The President emphasized that removing Infantino would be detrimental to the future success and profitability of FIFA.

This endorsement from Trump comes in the midst of criticism from UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF regarding Infantino’s handling of a proposed sale of commercial rights to the World Cup. The three confederations expressed concerns over Infantino’s actions, accusing him of breaching trust through deception and called for an independent review of the situation to ensure transparency and accountability.

Prime Minister Mark Carney also expressed doubts about Infantino’s leadership, citing concerns over recent events related to the proposed sale of World Cup rights. The football world has been in turmoil following Infantino’s now-abandoned plan to sell a portion of the World Cup’s commercial rights to private investors.

Despite the backlash, Infantino has received support from some federations, including CAF, Mexico, and various South American countries. FIFA defended Infantino against the criticisms, warning against efforts to undermine his leadership and emphasizing the need to adhere to the organization’s statutes and democratic processes.

While there have been calls for Infantino to step down, he has garnered backing from a significant number of FIFA member associations. However, divisions remain within the confederations, with differing opinions on Infantino’s suitability for the role.
