Netflix has unveiled a new four-part docuseries detailing the legal scrutiny and conviction of Sean (Diddy) Combs, despite objections from Combs’ legal team accusing Netflix of utilizing “unauthorized stolen footage.” The docuseries, titled Sean Combs: The Reckoning, premiered on Tuesday on the streaming platform. It features footage filmed with Combs’ consent in the days leading up to his 2024 indictment, showing interactions with his legal counsel and team as he navigates the investigation.

In response to the series, a spokesperson for Combs denounced it as a “shameful hit piece,” claiming that Netflix improperly used footage that Combs had collected over the years to tell his own story. The spokesperson also raised concerns about the involvement of Curtis (50 Cent) Jackson, a producer on the project with a history of conflict with Combs, describing the collaboration between Netflix and Jackson as a personal affront.

Director Alexandria Stapleton, in a statement on Netflix’s press platform, affirmed that the footage was acquired legally and with proper rights, mentioning attempts to engage Combs’ legal team for input with no response. Stapleton highlighted Combs’ propensity for self-documentation over the years, calling it an ongoing fixation.

Netflix refuted Combs’ claims of the series being retaliatory or biased, emphasizing that the production had no connections to past interactions between Combs and the streaming service. Additionally, the streaming giant clarified that despite Jackson’s role as an executive producer, he did not exert creative influence over the project.

Following an investigation into Combs’ alleged involvement in coercive sex gatherings, he was ultimately found guilty of two counts of transportation for prostitution, while being acquitted of charges related to sex trafficking and conspiracy. Despite a four-year prison sentence, the outcome was viewed as a victory for Combs, as the convictions carried lesser penalties compared to the potential life imprisonment he faced.

The trial’s resolution garnered significant media attention, with the series featuring interviews with jurors who deliberated on the case, offering insights into their decision-making process. The docuseries also delves into Combs’ relationship with Cassandra (Cassie) Ventura, who accused him of abuse and rape, presenting key evidence from a security camera footage depicting an altercation at a Los Angeles hotel in 2016.

Jurors shared their perspectives on Ventura’s claims and the testimonies presented during the trial, expressing doubts about certain allegations, including accusations from Combs’ former assistant. The series concludes with resources and support information for individuals affected by sexual assault.
