Police authorities in Steinbach, Manitoba, are cautioning the public to remain vigilant against overpayment scams following a recent incident where a fraudulent donation cheque was sent to a charity. The Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue president, Michelle Neufeld, disclosed that the organization was targeted by a scammer who claimed to have mistakenly overpaid and requested a refund of thousands of dollars.
The scam unfolded when an individual identifying as “Kevin Vance Owens” contacted the rescue via email in April, expressing interest in making a substantial donation by cheque. Subsequently, a cheque was received and deposited by Neufeld. However, the scammer, posing as Kevin, later alleged that an error had occurred, stating that $4,000 was sent instead of the intended $2,000, with the surplus amount meant for another organization. Pressuring the charity, the scammer insisted on receiving half of the funds back along with a tax receipt.
Fortunately, the charity recognized the potential scam and refrained from returning any money after discovering the cheque’s fraudulent nature. Neufeld emphasized the importance of thorough verification before any financial transactions. Although the animal rescue did not suffer financial loss, they acknowledged the seriousness of the scam, as a $4,000 donation would have granted the scammer significant recognition as a gold-level sponsor.
Neufeld affirmed that moving forward, the charity would implement stricter protocols, including verifying cheque authenticity before issuing tax receipts. Steinbach RCMP Staff Sgt. Mike Maxwell highlighted the increasing prevalence of scams, advising individuals to exercise caution and not succumb to pressure tactics employed by fraudsters. Maxwell urged victims to contact authorities and financial institutions promptly for assistance when faced with suspicious requests.
In a separate incident, Earl Funk, the mayor of Steinbach and owner of Earl’s Meat Market, shared his experience of falling victim to a suspected cyberscam, resulting in a loss of thousands of dollars. Funk revealed that his business mistakenly made electronic payments to a fraudulent entity posing as a supplier, leading to a financial loss of $3,000. The incident prompted the implementation of stringent payment approval processes within the business to prevent future fraudulent activities.
Funk expressed dismay at the violation of trust and emphasized the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures to safeguard against such cybercrimes. Both Neufeld and Funk emphasized the importance of vigilance and verification when dealing with financial transactions to prevent falling victim to scams. The community is urged to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity to the authorities promptly.
