Simon Fraser University, based in British Columbia, has decided to seek membership in U Sports after 15 years of participating in the NCAA against American institutions. The university aims to rejoin the Canadian varsity system’s Canada West conference to ensure the sustainability of its sports programs and reignite local rivalries.

Located in Burnaby, Metro Vancouver, SFU has been the sole Canadian institution competing at the Division II level in the NCAA since its acceptance into the American organization in 2009. The university cites financial and logistical challenges as reasons for the decision to discontinue competing in the United States.

Recently, SFU’s football team, established in 1965, was disbanded following the Lone Star conference’s choice not to renew its affiliation. Despite efforts by players and alumni to halt the football program termination through legal means, their injunction application was rejected by the Supreme Court.

SFU has indicated that its softball, golf, and outdoor track and field teams will no longer operate as varsity sports if it transitions back to U Sports due to the absence of Canadian championships in these disciplines. The fate of indoor track and field remains uncertain, with McGill University having recently discontinued its track program.
