Roger Federer, the first man to secure 20 Grand Slam singles titles, has been voted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in his inaugural year of eligibility, the institution located in Rhode Island revealed on Wednesday. Federer, who was part of a remarkable era in tennis alongside rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, described it as a “golden time for tennis.” He was the sole player to garner adequate support in the player category for the Hall of Fame’s 2026 class.

Candidates are eligible for consideration after a five-year hiatus from the tour and must receive approval from 75% of the voting panel comprising tennis media, historians, industry figures, Hall members, and fans. The voting outcomes are not disclosed by the Hall. Mary Carillo, a TV commentator, journalist, and former player, was also elected in the contributor category. The induction ceremony is scheduled for August.

Federer, who holds a career Grand Slam with wins at Wimbledon, the Australian Open, the U.S. Open, and the French Open, expressed his humility at being acknowledged by the sport and his peers. Despite his unparalleled success in tennis, Federer once admitted he never anticipated achieving as many major titles as he did. His retirement in 2021 marked the end of a remarkable career that saw him break numerous records and inspire a new generation of tennis players.

Nadal and Djokovic have since surpassed Federer’s Grand Slam tally, but his legacy as an ambassador for the sport remains unparalleled. Known for his graceful playing style and sportsmanship, Federer’s influence transcends his on-court achievements. His impact on the game has been acknowledged by young talents like Carlos Alcaraz, who has praised Federer for elevating tennis to new heights.

Federer’s dominance in tennis is evident from his numerous accomplishments, including a record-breaking number of weeks as the world No. 1, multiple Grand Slam victories, and his pivotal role in the success of the Swiss Davis Cup team and the Olympic doubles event. His influence extends beyond his playing days, setting a standard of excellence that continues to inspire the next generation of tennis stars.
