Lansdowne 2.0 received the green light at Ottawa city hall on Friday following council’s approval of the $419 million redevelopment initiative. The council members voted 15-10 in support of the project after incorporating various amendments, such as commitments to enhance transit services to the location and find a resolution to retain the Ottawa Charge women’s hockey team within the city.

The proposal sparked a significant debate among council members. Advocates viewed it as an opportunity to finance the upgrade of outdated facilities and establish a stable financial partnership with the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG). They asserted that the project would generate revenue from retail sales, ticket surcharges, football proceeds, and property taxes to offset expenses, reducing the burden on taxpayers.

However, opponents expressed skepticism about the projected revenues, as most of them are anticipated to materialize several decades down the line. They reiterated their concerns during the council session, highlighting the strain on taxpayers during a period of economic hardship. Somerset Coun. Ariel Troster emphasized the importance of utilizing public lands for the community’s benefit rather than for corporate gain.

Gloucester-Southgate Coun. Jessica Bradley criticized the project, raising concerns about potential ticket price hikes and the elimination of essential amenities like parkland and the stadium roof. The contentious issue of arena capacity also emerged, with the new event center in the Lansdowne 2.0 blueprint expected to reduce seating by approximately 3,000, potentially affecting the Ottawa Charge’s viability.

Despite the division among council members, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe supported the Lansdowne 2.0 plan, citing the necessity of the proposed financial strategy and the risks associated with delaying facility replacements. The final vote in favor of the project paves the way for the city to finalize its agreement with builder EBC Inc., initiating construction on the arena and event center later this year. The project timeline indicates that construction on the residential towers by Mirabella Development Corporation is set to conclude by 2034.
