A strong geomagnetic storm is anticipated by the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), potentially leading to the appearance of the northern lights across Canada and parts of the United States. The northern lights are usually triggered by a robust solar flare, causing magnetic fields to tangle and release bursts of radiation that can disrupt radio signals.

Following a solar flare, a coronal mass ejection (CME) occurs, characterized by a rapid stream of particles emitted by the sun traveling through the solar wind. Earth may intercept these particles, interacting with the magnetic field and atmospheric molecules, resulting in a mesmerizing light display in the sky.

In the past two days, three CMEs were discharged, with two brushing past Earth and one directly aimed towards it. These events may have caused the northern lights to be visible as far south as Minnesota on Wednesday night. The SWPC has issued a forecast of a G3 geomagnetic storm, signifying its strength on the G1 to G5 scale.

However, predicting the intensity of these storms remains a challenge, as confirmed by the SWPC. Despite the uncertainty, being in a location with a clear northern horizon is crucial for optimal viewing. Factors such as the speed of the solar wind and the position of the auroral hole play a role in determining the visibility of the lights.

Although a full moon may hinder visibility, there is still a chance to witness the phenomenon, especially if the necessary conditions align. Utilizing apps like Aurora Alerts and My Aurora Forecast can help individuals determine if the aurora is observable in their area.
