Markham is gearing up for a thrilling weekend as it hosts the NTT IndyCar Series, along with other motorsports events, for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy. While IndyCar has a history in Toronto, this marks the first time the race will be held outside the city on a brand-new track layout.
The 3.52-kilometre, 12-turn course will traverse the Unionville GO station grounds and feature racing around the York University Markham Campus and Markham Pan Am Centre. To reach the track, attendees are advised to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or take Highway 407, with parking available west of the event site.
Special transportation services are being provided by Metrolinx, including additional trips on the Stouffville Line. Increased York Region Transit frequency and shuttle services from designated parking lots to the event grounds in Markham are also in place.
Residents of Markham have been enduring disruptions due to track construction, with road closures impacting parts of Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard until Monday morning. Some roads will remain affected until August 27 for track dismantling.
The main event on Sunday will feature IndyCar racing, with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the points and considered a top contender. Other drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talents like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also compete in support series races.
Drivers are adapting to the new Markham track, appreciating the smooth surface compared to Toronto’s bumpy roads. The changes, including elevation shifts, present a challenge and excitement for the participants. The event promises an engaging experience for fans, with tickets available for Saturday and Sunday races, and free practice and qualifying sessions on Friday as part of Fan Friday.
