A man in his late 60s, Kevin Searcy, has been taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder following the tragic death of his wife, Diane Searcy, aged 69, in the small town of Snowden, situated approximately 200 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon in northeastern Saskatchewan.
According to a statement by the RCMP, law enforcement officials responded to a request for a wellness check at the couple’s residence around 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday. Upon arrival, they discovered Diane Searcy deceased at the scene and subsequently apprehended Kevin Searcy at the property.
Neighbors, including Larry McCamon, expressed shock over the incident, highlighting Diane’s struggle with severe dementia. McCamon recalled the couple’s routine walks around the village, noting the gradual decline in Diane’s ability to participate. He described Kevin as a compassionate and supportive neighbor who diligently cared for his wife as her health deteriorated.
The investigation into the case is being led by the RCMP major crimes unit, with ongoing inquiries to uncover further details. Kevin Searcy is set to make a court appearance at Melfort provincial court on Friday morning.
The community remains shaken by the tragic events that have unfolded, as they come to terms with the loss of Diane Searcy and the arrest of her husband.
