Instagram is updating its text-only logo, known as the wordmark, for the first time in a decade, as revealed by platform head Adam Mosseri. The new design features a bolder and more structured font compared to the previous cursive style. Mosseri stated that the refresh was necessary to create a cleaner and modern look while paying homage to the original simplicity that defines Instagram.

This change is part of a broader brand identity overhaul by Meta, the parent company, described as a forward-looking evolution that respects the platform’s heritage. However, not all users were pleased with the update, with some criticizing the new logo on tech news site Engadget.

The latest alteration marks the first update to the wordmark since 2016, maintaining a blend of minimal and cursive elements. Some users humorously noted that the new design could be mistaken for “Instagzam” due to the resemblance of the cursive “r” to a “z.”

Despite mixed reactions, Instagram remains a popular app under Meta’s umbrella, boasting two billion daily users in the last quarter. In comparison, TikTok, a major competitor, reportedly has slightly over one billion daily active users. Instagram has faced criticism in the past for controversial updates, such as a short-lived AI image generation feature and similarities to other platforms like BeReal.

Feedback on Mosseri’s announcement of the new wordmark has been predominantly positive, with many users praising the update for its freshness and timelessness. It’s worth noting that Mosseri has restricted comments on his posts, limiting the ability for all users to provide feedback.
