In a significant development, a Halton Police sergeant testified in the first-degree murder trial of Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney, presenting crucial evidence gathered by the police against the accused couple. Sgt. Julie Powers revealed that an extensive review of electronic devices seized from Hamber and Cooney in 2023 uncovered photos, videos, messages, and call logs related to their attempts to adopt two boys.
Initially, images on the devices depicted the couple with both boys, but over time, there was a noticeable decrease in photos featuring the older boy, L.L. Testimony from J.L., the younger boy, indicated that he had minimal interaction with L.L. before his tragic demise and spent most of his time isolated in his room.
Referred to as L.L. and J.L. for anonymity, L.L. passed away while under the care of Hamber and Cooney in December 2022. The women have pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, confinement, assault with a weapon, and neglecting J.L.’s basic needs.
Evidence presented in court revealed the distressing condition in which L.L. was found by paramedics – severely malnourished, emaciated, and locked in his basement bedroom. Despite being 12 years old, L.L. appeared much younger due to his dire state and tragically died shortly after being discovered.
The prosecution alleges that Hamber and Cooney subjected the children to abuse and neglect. Testimony from various witnesses, including medical professionals and educators, has been instrumental in shedding light on the harrowing circumstances surrounding the case.
Photos from earlier periods depicted the boys in regular attire, but later images showed them wearing wetsuits, with authorities seizing such suits and zip ties from the couple’s residence. The defense’s explanation that the boys wore wetsuits due to indoor accidents was contradicted by J.L.’s testimony.
Furthermore, investigations revealed that the surveillance system in the house was managed using the Wyze app, with attempts to delete incriminating footage and messages made following L.L.’s tragic passing.
Audio recordings played in court portrayed disturbing interactions between the women and L.L., with derogatory remarks and mistreatment evident in the exchanges. The trial continues, with further testimonies expected in the coming days.
