After a short retirement, Marc-Antoine Dequoy, a former CFL player, has returned to football action at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world flag football championship in Duesseldorf, Germany. Dequoy retired from the Montreal Alouettes in February due to physical strain, but he felt the urge to compete again in a different setting like flag football.

Despite initial reservations, Dequoy joined the Canadian men’s flag football team after being approached by head coach Paul LaPolice. He took a break from football to co-host a television show but ultimately missed the competitive spirit of the sport. Transitioning to flag football presented new challenges for Dequoy, especially in adapting to the different rules and gameplay style.

Canada, along with other countries, faced a setback when Nigeria withdrew from the competition due to visa issues. As a result, the tournament format was adjusted, and Canada will now play fewer preliminary games. The top finishers in the championship will secure spots for the Olympics, with Dequoy emphasizing the team’s focus on achieving Olympic qualification.

The significance of potentially competing in the Olympics is not lost on Dequoy, who views it as a dream come true to represent his country at such a prestigious event. The competition in Germany serves as a crucial step towards Olympic qualification, with the top-performing teams advancing to the coveted Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
