Pankiw shared a screenshot of a text conversation on Instagram where she firmly rejected the opportunity to work on the HBO production.
“It’s really that simple to reject funding for transphobia!” Pankiw emphasized in her post, clarifying that the role in question was for directing, not acting. The director, known for her work on projects such as “Black Mirror” and “Feel Good,” expressed her stance against contributing to content that aligns with views she opposes.
The new series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is scheduled for release on HBO Max on December 25, 2026. Adapted from J.K. Rowling’s iconic book series, the show will stream on Crave in Canada. Rowling’s controversial statements on transgender issues have sparked debates, with the author facing criticism for her views.
Another filmmaker, Kate Herron, also disclosed her decision to decline involvement in the “Harry Potter” series, echoing Pankiw’s sentiments. Herron, recognized for her work on “Loki” and other popular shows, expressed solidarity with Pankiw’s choice.
While representatives for Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO, have not commented on the refusals, Pankiw’s representatives have yet to respond to inquiries seeking further details on the text exchange.
