A new energy powerhouse is in the making in Canada, as Emera Inc. from Halifax and Canadian Utilities from Calgary have announced a merger. This merger will create a new company valued at $72 billion, positioning it as one of the largest utilities in North America. The move comes as part of a strategic shift for the companies, with Canadian Utilities’ controlling shareholder, Atco Ltd., focusing on defense, housing, and infrastructure projects.

The idea for the merger was initiated by Emera’s CEO, Scott Balfour, and Canadian Utilities’ executive chair, Nancy Southern, who both saw the potential for creating a strong Canadian energy company to meet the growing demand for power. The merged entity, operating under the Emera brand, will serve millions of customers across Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Australia.

The newly formed Emera-Canadian Utilities company plans to invest $32 billion in capital projects by 2030, with a significant focus on Florida and Alberta, high-growth regions in North America. Nancy Southern will lead a refocused Atco and co-chair Emera’s board post-merger.

The merger is expected to bring about changes in ownership structures and market perceptions, allowing both companies to capitalize on new opportunities in the energy sector. Shareholders of Emera, Canadian Utilities, and Atco are set to vote on the transaction early next year, subject to various regulatory approvals.
