In a thrilling match on Wednesday, Canada secured its first-ever win in nine appearances at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, defeating Uganda 2-1. Elijah Roche scored in the 88th minute, leveling the score after Uganda’s James Bogere had put his team ahead in the 25th minute. Marius Aiyenero then converted a penalty in stoppage time, sealing the victory for Canada.

The Canadian team, now 1-20-4 at the tournament, showed resilience and determination to come from behind and claim the historic win. Head coach Mike Vitulano commended the players for their character and teamwork, setting a new standard for future generations.

Canada will face France and Chile in its upcoming Group K matches. Meanwhile, France, a former U-17 champion, secured a 2-0 victory over Chile in their recent game. The tournament, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches, will run until November 27 at the Aspire Zone complex in Doha, Qatar.

Despite having more possession, Canada struggled to convert their chances, while Uganda posed a threat on the counterattack. The match saw Uganda outshooting Canada 13-19, with both teams displaying competitive spirit throughout the game.

The Canadian starting lineup showcased players from various MLS clubs, English and Dutch teams, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of the team members. In contrast, Uganda’s lineup consisted of players from domestic clubs.

The match witnessed several close calls, with Uganda having better scoring opportunities in the first half. However, Canada’s defense, led by Roche, managed to contain Uganda’s attacks and eventually turned the tide in their favor.

As the tournament progresses, both teams will look to build on their performances and aim for further success on the global stage.
