Toronto Blue Jays player Bo Bichette has chosen not to accept a qualifying offer from the team, indicating his intention to explore other options in the open market for his next contract. Bichette, who has been a key player for the Blue Jays throughout his seven-year career, may still consider returning to Toronto, but he will now assess offers from other potential suitors as well.
The deadline for players to either accept or decline qualifying offers was Tuesday, with Bichette being one of nine players who turned down the offer this year. The qualifying offer for the 2026 season stood at $22,025,000 US, calculated based on the average salary of the top 125 highest-paid MLB players.
In contrast, four players, including Shota Imanaga of the Chicago Cubs, Gleyber Torres of the Detroit Tigers, Brandon Woodruff of the Milwaukee Brewers, and Trent Grisham of the New York Yankees, accepted qualifying offers from their respective teams.
During the recent World Series, Bo Bichette performed impressively for the Blue Jays, despite missing some games due to a knee injury. In Game 7 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bichette hit a notable home run off Shohei Ohtani, contributing to Toronto’s gameplay. However, the Blue Jays ultimately fell short, losing to the Dodgers in a thrilling extra-inning finale.
Following their near miss at the World Series title, the Toronto Blue Jays are now under pressure to build a competitive team for the upcoming season. Bo Bichette is a top priority for the team, along with other key free agents like Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer, Ty France, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Seranthony Domínguez. Amidst a relatively quiet free-agent market, Canadian player Josh Naylor has secured a significant five-year deal with the Seattle Mariners after an impressive performance against the Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series.
