Welsh singer-songwriter Bronwen Lewis, who gained attention for covering Dolly Parton’s songs in Welsh, recently fulfilled a dream by collaborating with the country music icon on a new recording. Lewis had been sharing her Welsh renditions of Parton’s music online for approximately two years before catching the interest of Parton’s niece, singer Jada Star. Eventually, Parton herself agreed to join the duo in the studio to record a new Welsh version of “Jolene.”

Describing the experience as a “pinch-me moment,” Lewis expressed gratitude for Parton’s belief in the project. The collaborative effort resulted in the release of the Welsh cover of “Jolene,” featuring vocals from Parton in both Welsh and English. This release marks one of Parton’s posthumous songs, recorded before her passing in August at the age of 80.

Star, reflecting on the collaboration, emphasized the significance of the project in honoring Parton’s music. The decision to involve Parton in the recording was met with immediate approval from the country legend, who embraced the idea wholeheartedly.

Lewis, a devoted fan of country music and Parton’s work, highlighted the emotional impact of hearing Parton’s vocals in Welsh. The deep connection between the Welsh language and the heartfelt message of the song resonated with listeners, evoking profound emotional responses.

Parton’s Welsh ancestry on her mother’s side adds a personal touch to the collaboration, further deepening the connection between the artists. The collaboration not only celebrates Welsh culture and language but also showcases the universal power of music to convey emotions transcending language barriers.

The Welsh language, with a rich history dating back to pre-Roman times, has endured centuries of suppression. Today, a significant percentage of the Welsh population speaks the language, symbolizing a resilient cultural heritage.

Lewis expressed pride in the global platform the collaboration provides for the Welsh language and culture. She hopes the project conveys the message that emotions like heartbreak are universal, transcending language barriers and emphasizing our shared humanity.
