Eight years after the successful release of “Crazy Rich Asians” that marked a significant milestone for Asian representation in Hollywood, the beloved story is set to return to the screen as an HBO series. The upcoming eight-episode, one-hour drama will continue the narrative from the 2018 film, with Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng reprising their roles as series regulars. Additionally, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will return as a recurring character. Production for the series is scheduled to commence in 2027.

Adapted from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels, the series will be spearheaded by Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film. Joining Lim are Kevin Kwan, director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, returning as executive producers. The collaboration will be co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television.

Adele Lim expressed excitement about the series, describing it as the long-awaited sequel that fans have been anticipating. The series will delve deeper into character development and settings across the eight episodes, but specific storylines from the books have not been disclosed.

The 2018 movie follows the journey of Rachel (played by Constance Wu), a New York economics professor who discovers her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) hails from one of Singapore’s wealthiest families. Michelle Yeoh portrays Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor, while Ronny Chieng takes on the role of his cousin Eddie.

The announcement of the series brings closure to fans wondering about the future of Rachel and Nick. Director Jon M. Chu humorously echoed the sentiments of fans eagerly awaiting the sequel, quoting a famous line from the film.

The original “Crazy Rich Asians” film made a significant impact upon its release, being the first major Hollywood movie in over two decades to feature an all-Asian cast since “The Joy Luck Club” in 1993. The romantic comedy, made for $30 million US, grossed over $239 million US and became the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy in nearly ten years at the North American box office.

The series is anticipated to build upon the success of the film by further exploring the characters and their stories. With hopes for the inclusion of more beloved characters like Awkwafina and Gemma Chan’s Astrid, fans are eager for the series to expand on the world of “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Author Kevin Kwan expressed his delight at seeing the characters come to life in a series format, calling it a dream come true and thanking the loyal fans for their patience. The series is also seen as an opportunity to pave the way for more Asian talent in the industry, breaking down barriers and providing platforms for creatives to showcase their skills and stories.
