The Israeli government has issued a warning to intensify “targeted strikes” on Gaza unless Hamas acts to prevent the launch of kites, including by children, towards Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on social media platform X, disclosed that he and Defence Minister Israel Katz conducted a “situational assessment” to address the threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites released from Gaza into Israel. The meeting was attended by Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the chief of the general staff, the head of the National Security Council, and senior Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officials.

Netanyahu emphasized that Israel had cautioned Hamas that if the kite launches persist, the IDF would escalate targeted strikes against those responsible and clear the population from areas used as launch sites for kites, drones, and balloons. He affirmed Israel’s commitment to safeguarding its communities and citizens’ sense of security from threats posed by Hamas or any Gaza-based groups.

Despite the tensions, for 13-year-old Omar Halawa from Khan Younis, flying kites along the shore serves as a brief escape amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Omar expressed that flying kites brings solace and happiness in a place where little joy remains.

Omar mentioned that he personally crafts the kites, adding fringes and tails, and is mindful of the warnings issued by Netanyahu regarding kite flying. He emphasized that as children, they do not engage in any aggression and simply aspire to live in peace.

In the lead-up to the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on southern Israel, which ignited the conflict, Israel reported incidents of burning kites and balloons launched from Gaza causing fires and damage. Recent discoveries of kites near a kibbutz close to Gaza revealed no weaponry or hazardous materials attached.

Netanyahu’s recent directive coincided with Israeli strikes and tank fire that resulted in the death of at least four individuals, including two children, as reported by hospital officials. The strikes targeted various locations including refugee camps and resulted in tragic casualties.

Hamas, responding via the Telegram messaging platform, condemned Netanyahu’s statements regarding children flying kites and accused Israel of escalating aggression against Palestinians. The group called for international intervention to denounce Israeli actions and facilitate a genuine ceasefire in Gaza.

Omar expressed fear about flying kites due to potential strikes and the risk to those around him. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, shared concerns about the impact of security concerns on children’s activities and the need for them to find solace amidst the conflict.

As tensions persist, the children, including Omar, adapted by flying their kites near their tents as dusk approached, seeking moments of joy in a challenging environment.
