Brooke Henderson is in contention at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton, with room for improvement in the upcoming rounds. The defending champion, hailing from Smiths Falls, Ontario, is aiming for her third victory in Canada’s LPGA event. She carded a solid 68 in the second round, placing her at 5-under par.

Currently, Henderson trails the leader, Soo Bin Joo from South Korea, by four strokes as Joo sits at 9 under after the second round at Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Henderson was cruising at 7 under until two late bogeys on the back-nine, one of which inadvertently hit a spectator with her tee shot. Henderson promptly apologized and gave the spectator a golf ball as a gesture of goodwill.

Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, last year’s low amateur in Mississauga, finished strong with consecutive birdies to post a 67 and reach 3 under for the tournament. The event’s cut line allows the top 65 players and ties to advance, with Canadian teenagers Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, also in the mix, starting the day three shots behind the lead at 5 under.

The competition is heating up at the $2.75 million US event, setting the stage for an exciting finish as the players gear up for the remaining rounds.
