Five senior Iranian officials are set to be sanctioned for their involvement in activities in the Strait of Hormuz that disrupt international peace, announced Canada’s foreign affairs minister. The sanctions aim to address actions that undermine global trade and energy security, emphasizing the importance of freedom of navigation in the strait. The targeted individuals, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been identified for their roles in threatening the critical international waterway.

The officials facing sanctions are Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini. This move brings the total number of individuals and entities sanctioned by Canada to 232 and 260, respectively, across Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors.

The sanctions come amidst efforts to reach a peace agreement between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, which has so far remained elusive. The conflict that began in February following U.S.-Israeli actions has led to ongoing tensions, with President Donald Trump fluctuating between threats of escalation and promises of a potential peace deal. Iran, in turn, has sought to leverage control over the strait to influence negotiations.

Canada, along with other countries, has called for an end to attempts to block the Strait of Hormuz and expressed readiness to contribute to reopening the vital shipping route. Trump’s requests for allied support have been met with some tension, as relationships strain over differing approaches to the conflict. Despite claims of military success against Iran, disruptions to shipping persist, prompting discussions about maintaining a naval presence in the region to enforce blockades.

Pressure is mounting for a resolution to the conflict as high fuel prices impact approval ratings and the global economy. The International Energy Agency forecasts a significant decline in global oil supply this year, further emphasizing the need for stability in the region.
